About the project

The Howard – Orange Bikeway is one of six segments planned as part of the 13-mile North Park | Mid-City Bikeways. The proposed project would provide bikeways on existing urban roadways in the North Park and Mid-City (City Heights) communities of the City of San Diego, and also connect to adjacent Uptown and Eastern communities. The purpose of the proposed project is to make it more convenient, attractive, and safe for people to ride bikes. The proposed project also would benefit people who walk and drive by making roadways safer for all users.

The proposed Howard – Orange Bikeway will be 3.3 miles and will run along Howard Avenue, between Park Boulevard and 32nd Street, and along Orange Avenue between 32nd Street and Estrella Avenue.

Public Hearing and Traffic and Safety Assessment

This open house and public hearing marks an important step for the Howard – Orange Bikeway project. SANDAG, as the lead agency under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), will hold a public hearing to hear comments on the proposed project. The public hearing will be held from 6:45 to 8 p.m., at which time attendees may provide verbal comments on the project. 

SANDAG published a Traffic and Safety Impact Assessment for the project on July 12, 2017. Preparation of this assessment is required before the SANDAG Board of Directors can make a determination that the proposed project is exempt from CEQA under Public Resources Code Section 21080.20.5.

The public hearing will be preceded by an open house from 6 to 6:45 p.m. showcasing project features and updates, including the results of the Traffic and Safety Impact Assessment. During the open house portion of the meeting, attendees will have the opportunity to talk with project team members and provide feedback. The SANDAG Transportation Committee is anticipated to consider whether the proposed project is exempt from CEQA at its September 15, 2017 meeting. Comments collected at the public hearing and open house and written responses to those comments will be provided to the Transportation Committee for its consideration prior to their September 15, 2017 meeting.

Saturday, July 8: Tour De Fat Bicycle Parade & Music Festival

Tour de Fat Bicycle Parade is happening again this year. Since the music festival has changed from a free event in Golden Hill to a ticketed event at Waterfront Park, the bicycle parade has changed. This year the parade is still all ages, but will meet at Panama 66 at 2:30pm down and work down to Waterfront Park.

After the parade, gates to the Tour De Fat Festival open at 4pm. It is ticketed at $25 a person and is 100% 21+.

The mission of the San Diego Mountain Bike Association is to advocate for outdoor recreational access throughout San Diego County, foster respect for the environment and educate trail users in safe and appropriate mountain biking use, provide expert assistance in sustainable trail design, building, and maintenance and work with other trail user groups, land managers, and policy makers to develop fair and responsible policies governing the use of public and private lands. The funds generated from Tour de Fat will allow SDMBA to rise to a new level of member service, communications, and more efficient operations.

Planning Begins for Biking Connection between Imperial Beach and San Ysidro
The San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) is pleased to announce that initial planning for the Border to Bayshore Bikeway project is now underway. The approximately 8.5-mile route will establish a key biking connection between the communities of Imperial Beach and San Ysidro.

SANDAG invites you to a community meeting to talk with project team members and learn about the Border to Bayshore Bikeway.

May 4: Cyclo De Mayo to Pedal Through Historic Barrio Logan
Bike Coalition to bring National Bike Month to San Diego this May

On May 4, people will replace piñatas with bicicletas and join the San Diego Bike Coalition for the second-annual Cyclo de Mayo community ride and fiesta.

The festivities will commence at 5:30 p.m. at downtown’s Quartyard with remarks from Councilmember David Alvarez. Councilmember Alvarez will join on a leisurely bike parade that tours the artistic wonders of Barrio Logan and Chicano Park – recently recognized as a national historic landmark.

Upon returning from the 45-minute ride, fiesta-goers can indulge in a craft beer while listening to tunes from local Latin-fusion band, Elrio. Throughout the night, attendees can support local bicycle vendors, including a Barrio Logan and a National City bike shop. Under open sky and string lights, attendees of Cyclo de Mayo are encouraged to revel in the cultural diversity that makes San Diego an exceptional place to live, work and ride.

Cyclo de Mayo kicks off the first of many events the Bike Coalition has planned for National Bike Month, including:

April 30 – CiclaVista: A car-free community celebration in Chula Vista to support local businesses and encourage neighborhood discovery without car traffic.
May 13 – Empire Bikes Back: At Empire Bikes Back, local organizations in Southeastern San Diego will host a Star Wars-themed bike education classes for kids, emphasizing bike-handling drills and traffic safety.
May 18 – Bike to Work Day: Ditch four wheels for two as business suits will cycle through the city on Bike to Work Day.
May 20 – Advocacy Training and Bike Ride: The Bike Coalition will speak about the Border to Bayshore Bikeway project and then lead a bike ride along the potential route.
May 27 – Bike to Art: This event will bring families together for a short ride ending in the iconic Chicano Park showcasing art from the Barrio.
According to the Bike Coalition, National Bike Month should continue in San Diego beyond May. “We hope to inspire people to embrace bicycles as a form of everyday commuting that makes our region a better place to live and makes every month Bike Month,” says Hanshaw.

Bike Coalition to lead discussion on bike improvements planned for coastal neighborhood 

WHAT: Pedaling, planning and happy hour join forces for a monthly Bike Coalition original: Bikes on Tap. This month, cyclists will join the Bike Coalition at Amplified Ale Works in Pacific Beach to discuss “PB Pathways” – the neighborhood’s network of safe routes for transportation beyond cars. Community members will work with the Bike Coalition to brainstorm ideas for improving safety and preventing pedestrian and bike casualties in the popular neighborhood. 

WHY: In Pacific Beach, the intersection of Garnet Avenue and Mission Boulevard has been rated the third most dangerous intersection for people walking and biking in San Diego. As the only countywide organization advocating for and protecting the rights of all people on bikes, the Coalition hopes Bikes on Tap will bring residents together in a casual environment to discuss the future of biking in their own backyards.

MARCH 18-19: Pedal-Powered Group to Test its Legs at Bike Touring in Southern California
Bike Coalition to empower first-time bike tourists on coastal Kerry’s Ride

WHAT: Bike riders of all abilities will unite for an adventurous, two-day coastal ride to test their legs at bike touring. Among unmatched views of the Southern California coastline, the pedal-powered group will join the Bike Coalition to learn the ins and outs of bike touring as they ride more than 50 miles along part of the nation’s most popular bike tour – the coastal route from Canada to Mexico.

Participants will take the scenic train to Solana Beach, where the tour will begin with friends, the ocean and breathtaking views. The group will camp overnight under the stars in San Onofre before venturing to Mission Brewery on day two and raising a glass for the grand finale in downtown San Diego.

WHY: Kerry Kunsman, who was a long-time board member of the Bike Coalition, believed that anyone can bike tour. He expressed his passion for making bike riding accessible to all people through dedicated advocacy and education. This ride honors his legacy by welcoming all types of riders in the hopes of introducing more people to the many joys of traveling by bike.
